Facebook is a social media platform founded by Mark Zuckerberg along with his college roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. Launched on February 4, 2004, it allows users to create profiles, share photos and videos, send messages, and keep in touch with friends, family, and colleagues. Over time, Facebook expanded its features to include pages for businesses, public figures, and organizations, as well as groups, events, and a marketplace.
In addition to its core platform, Facebook has acquired other major social media and technology companies, including Instagram and WhatsApp. In 2021, Facebook, Inc. rebranded itself as Meta Platforms, Inc., reflecting its broader focus on building the "metaverse," a collective virtual shared space. However, the social media platform itself still retains the Facebook name.
